Why involve women in drought management?

This year’s theme of the 2023 World Day to Combat Desertification & Drought is “Herland. HerRights”

The number and duration of droughts has increased by 29 percent since 2000, as compared to the two previous decades (WMO 2021). When more than 2.3 billion people already face water stress, this is a huge problem.

In times of drought and food insecurity, women often give priority to their husband and family, exposing themselves to suffering. In many parts of the world, women are more exposed to drought than men because of systematic sexism.

Land is closely related to severe impact of drought, that’s why providing women #Herland #Herrights increase drought resilience of the whole society.

Without women we ignore half of our capacity to increase drought resilience. Find here why women are key actors for drought management.
