“Monitoring and Early Warning” is the first pillar of integrated drought management (IDM) and plays a central role in strengthening preparedness, planning, and risk reduction. Effective drought monitoring systems provide timely, reliable information that supports decision-making across key sectors such as agriculture, water resources, and disaster risk management.
To enhance understanding of drought monitoring efforts worldwide, the Integrated Drought Management Programme (IDMP) has developed the Global Drought Mosaic.
The initiative aims to provide a coherent global overview of drought conditions through complementary products that explore drought monitoring systems at different scales: national, regional, and global. The objective of this project is to provide a structured overview of existing drought monitoring systems, improve consistency and accessibility of drought information and support knowledge exchange at the global level.
The products:
- National Drought Monitors: This map provides an overview of drought monitoring systems implemented at the national level. It highlights the availability and operational status of national tools and offers links to relevant platforms where available. Check the map.
- Regional Drought Monitors: This map focuses on multi-country initiatives that monitor drought conditions across broader geographic areas. It highlights the availability of regional tools and offers links to available platforms. Check the map.
- Harmonized Global Drought Map: This product provides an integrated global overview of drought conditions based on the qualitative harmonization of regional drought information. The development of this product is still in its pilot phase. Initial developments focused on integrating regional drought monitors for an example period, reflecting the maturity and availability of regional products.
