We would like to invite you to a Virtual Exchange that looks back at the drought negotiations at UNCCD COP17 and considers how we can move forward together towards COP18.

For the second consecutive UNCCD COP, negotiations on drought proved very difficult. After our Virtual Exchange on the “Stalemate on Drought,” held following COP16 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2024, we find ourselves in a similar situation after COP17 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in August 2026. In this session, speakers will reflect on lessons from COP17, consider the way forward for consultations, share experiences from other international processes, and explore constructive approaches to building common ground through continued dialogue, collaboration and practical engagement. More information on the agenda and speakers will follow soon.

As usual, we will have a marketplace where we invite partners to present their projects and initiatives briefly (3 minutes each). Please send a message to sabina.bokal@gwpcee.org to suggest a contribution.

Want to share your views ahead of the session? Join the discussion in the IDMP Community of Practice. We’d like to hear what you think is the biggest obstacle to reaching agreement on drought and what could help move things forward before COP18. If you’re already a member, add your thoughts to the discussion. If not, join the community and take part. We’ll bring some of your ideas into the Virtual Exchange.
