New Online Course: Drought Risk Mitigation, Preparedness, and Response

A new online course on Drought Risk Mitigation, Preparedness, and Response was officially launched today at UNCCD COP17, during the side event “Accelerating Drought Resilience through Learning, Collaboration and Practice.”

The course is part of a series of training courses on the three pillars of Integrated Drought Management (IDM), covering:

  • Monitoring and Early Warning;
  • Drought Risk and Impact Assessment; and
  • Risk Mitigation, Preparedness, and Response.

Developed through collaboration among the Global Water Partnership (GWP), Integrated Drought Management Programme (IDMP), International Drought Resilience Alliance (IDRA), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the course provides practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders with practical knowledge and tools to strengthen drought resilience.

The new course focuses on translating drought risk information and early warnings into effective preparedness and response actions, while addressing vulnerability across water, ecosystems, land, finance, health, and social systems. It also highlights gender equality, social inclusion, vulnerable populations, multi-sectoral coordination, and learning through monitoring and evaluation.

The launch at COP17 underscores the growing importance of investing in knowledge and capacity as drought risks continue to evolve. No single course or intervention is enough. Building drought resilience requires continuous learning, collaboration, exchange of experiences, and learning from one another.

The new course provides another practical step towards equipping stakeholders with the knowledge and tools needed to move from reacting to drought crises towards anticipatory, coordinated, and resilient drought management.
