Together for a drought resilient world
Drought is among the most pervasive and damaging natural hazards affecting societies and ecosystems worldwide. Its impacts extend beyond temporary water shortages, disrupting food production, degrading land and ecosystems, undermining water security, and threatening human health, livelihoods, and social stability. Recent decades have also shown that drought is no longer a slow-onset, isolated phenomenon. Flash droughts, compound drought–heat events, and prolonged multi-year droughts are becoming more common, often overwhelming traditional crisis-response approaches.
This 3-year Implementation Plan responds directly to these challenges. It translates the principles of integrated drought management into concrete actions focused on strengthening institutional coordination, improving drought monitoring and early warning, promoting sustainable land and water management, and embedding drought resilience within broader climate adaptation and development frameworks.
Our Vision
Our vision remains a world in which everyone is resilient to drought. Achieving this vision has become increasingly urgent as climate change and the global water crisis accelerate, while shifting global security priorities continue to reduce attention and financial support for climate adaptation and development efforts.
The Implementation Plan outlines priority activity areas designed to scale up integrated drought management through three main objectives:
- Improving drought management practices by supporting integrated approaches, good governance, appropriate infrastructure, and sustainable financing to strengthen water security, climate resilience, and sustainable growth.
- Providing demand-driven guidance and capacity building by sharing knowledge, delivering training, and supporting stakeholders with practical tools and guidance for improved drought management.
- Strengthening collaboration and dialogue across the global drought community, recognizing that cooperation is essential to achieving drought resilience where nobody is left behind.
